So the French Alps are known for their number of downhill mountain biking tracks, so a friend and I took our XR's there for a week last summer. There are a few nice forest roads to ride and as we rode higher and higher the snow prevented us from crossing the border to Switzerland unfortunately. We rode some nice tracks on the way back down though.

Is off road motorcycle riding allowed in the Alps? I was wondering if you are allowed to ride there with motorcycles. When I tried to ask some officials nobody could give me a straight answer to if it was legal or not.

From our experience it seems to be OK as long as you stick to the forest access roads. We rode past forest workers and they didn't try to stop us or anything. I would say that you are not allowed to ride along the hiking trails. Since we went during autumn, there was nobody around once you get out of the valleys and up into the hills.
